We have covered the entire structures portfolio updates so far. This blog is all about flow and it covers fluid flow as well as plastic flow.
Computational Fluid Dynamics Updates
Dassault Systemes offers multiple solutions on fluid flow. The mainstream one is the internal flow based on Navier Stokes formulation. The updates in the article are limited to this type of flow only which resides in the FMK role.
- Streamline Enhancements: Streamlines are a common display style for the trajectory of flow in the output. Earlier streamline definition required rake points as the input. The updates include the geometry plane as an input instead of rake points. Additional display styles such as spheres. The plane can change its position and orientation using the robot tool. P-V curves support: This enhancement is related to porous zone definition. Previously, the user was supposed to provide viscous and inertial resistance properties to define porosity. The material supplier usually has PV curves that define pressure drop vs velocity as standard porous medium property. The user must extract the properties from the PV curve externally to be used in 3DExperience. Now 3DX can directly take PV curve as the input. Sensor Enhancement: A single sensor can now have multiple inlet or outlet supports. This eases the user job in cases where outputs at multiple openings are required. Further enhancements include arithmetic operations between support locations such as pressure or velocity drops between inlets and outlets. Plastic Injection Molding Updates
This product is the result of SIMPOE plastic flow solver acquisition and its placement in the 3DExperience platform. Dassault Systemes team did a great job in offering an environment and workflow that can be easily adopted by the designer. The only missing piece of the puzzle was a robust plastics material databank. That piece has also been put in place in this release.
- Mesh Quality Report: The underlying mesh operation uses a tetrahedral meshing technique. User does not need to worry about the mesh in general. However, the new release pops out a mesh quality report with aspect ratio, skewness, and element face twist.                                                             2023xFD01

- Material DB Enhancement: This one is the most comprehensive and value-added enhancement in the product. A total of 230 new polymer grades have been added from the largest plastics raw material manufacturers across the globe: 128 grades from MOCOM, 98 grades from SABIC and 4 grades from EMS-GRIVORY.
A total of 17 plastic grades have been updated: 10 grades from EMS-GRIVORY and 7 grades from SABIC. At the recommendation of manufacturers, a total of 194 obsolete grades have been removed from the database: 189 grades from SABIC, 4 grades from ALBIS and 1 grade from Borealis. A grade of Borealis was renamed as well. These enhancements ensure that the latest material grades and up to date material data are available for simulations. This is the reality of the plastics industry where hundreds of new plastic grades are introduced every year, and few old grades get deprecated. The solution now has a database of 4197 grades. Below is a snapshot of plastic material companies Dassault Systemes having partnership to get updated plastic material grades. 2023xFD02

Thermoplastic Enhancement: Simulation now considers pressure dependent viscosity. Certain amorphous polymers exhibit an increase in viscosity with pressure. Simulation results validated through benchmark with SABIC material specialties that used the non-zero D3 viscosity coefficient to account for variation with pressure.
